Tip!

In English and French, the sentence structure follows the same pattern when using the verb "To be" (être). Here is the detail:

I am = je suis

You are = Tu es

He / She is = il / elle est

This similarity in sentence structure between English and French makes it easier for those who speak English  to understand and apply the verb "to be" in French. By recognizing this pattern, students can quickly understand how to express basic statements about themselves and others. Keep practising and using this framework; you will become more comfortable forming sentences in French.

Accents

French accents play an important role in pronunciation and can change the sound of a letter. Here are some examples:

The accent "é" (é accent aigu) in words like "journée" (day) and "pétition" (petition) adds a sound similar to the English "ay" as in "bay".

The accent "è" (è grave accent) in words like "très" (very) gives the letter "e" a sound similar to the short "e" in English as in "bet".

Excellent tip!

In French, every noun has a gender and is categorized as either masculine or feminine. This distinction is important because it affects the choice of articles used with nouns.

Masculine nouns are preceded by the indefinite article "un" (a/an) or the definite article "le" (o).

Feminine nouns are preceded by the indefinite article "une" (a/an) or the definite article "la" (o).

For example:

  • un garçon (a boy)

  • une fille (a girl)

  • un homme (man)

  • une femme (a woman)

  • un chien (a dog)

  • une pizza (one pizza)

Remember that the gender of a noun is not always predictable based on its meaning, so it is important to learn and memorize the gender of each noun. Paying attention to the gender of nouns will help you correctly use articles and other related words in French.
